The GWO Crane and Hoist Basic User module is designed for wind industry personnel who are required to operate common types of small, fixed cranes and hoists during pre-planned lifting operations, both onshore and offshore.

Through a combination of theoretical instruction and extensive practical training, participants learn how to prepare, perform and complete basic lifting operations safely. The course focuses on the operator’s responsibility to follow the lifting plan, risk assessment, manufacturer’s instructions, company procedures and applicable legislation.

Participants become familiar with the cranes, hoists, lifting accessories, operating systems and safety devices commonly used in the wind industry. They also practise pre-use inspections, equipment setup, load movement, communication, emergency procedures and the correct actions required after completing a lifting operation.

The module covers basic lifting operations involving loads with known or easily calculated weights, suitable lifting points, standard slinging arrangements and steady environmental conditions. Dynamic lifting operations, such as lifting from a moving vessel, and the lifting of personnel are not covered by this training.
Outcome
​After successfully completing the module, participants can take responsibility as basic users for operating common types of fixed cranes and hoists during basic lifting operations, provided that they follow the relevant procedures, documentation and legal requirements.
